Hello…. We are enjoying summer break at the moment, no school for Carla and Renan until end of this month…. This year summer break is special since Oma, Opa and Tia Sita are back in Canada, woohoo! Tia Sita is going to stay for only one more week, but Oma and Opa are going to stay here a bit longer, until end of August.

Oma, Opa and Tia Sita arrived just a few days before Mamae’s birthday. So, we celebrated the birthday with Indonesian (Javanese) style; besides a birthday cake, we also had tumpeng, a special yellow rice that Javanese people have for special occasions.

So happy!

That day also happened to be the first day of Heritage Festival 2019. So, after the birthday party, we went to Hawrelak Park for the festival.

According to the festival website, Heritage Festival is “a three-day event to sample delicious food, see creative performances, and celebrate Canada’s multiculturalism. Enjoy the tastes, smells, sights and sounds from 100 countries and cultures at 73 outdoor pavilions. Explore the Festival and enjoy free entertainment on more than 25 stages throughout Hawrelak Park.”

It’s a yearly event and always falls on the first weekend of August.

This is our third Heritage Festival… we always enjoyed it a lot! It’s always fun to learn about different cultures and watch performances, but our favourite part is trying different food from all over the world!

This year, we had Poffertjes (Holland), Bison Bannock Burger (Indigenous), Kangaroo Slider (Australia), Blueberry Perogies and Borshch (Ukraine), Caramel Petushok (Russia), Chica Morada (Peru), Pistachio Saffron Ice Cream (Iran), Beef Skewer (Cote d’Ivoire), Spring Rolls and Green Onion Cake (Hong Kong). Unfortunately we don’t really have pictures of the food, we were too busy eating….

These are the only pictures of the food we managed to take… Pistachio Saffron Ice Cream and Bison Bannock Burger. We’ll have to remember to take more pictures next year….

Here are some of other pictures we took during the festival….

We had so much fun… Besides eating and watching performances, it was great just to spend time talking and relaxing with the whole family.

So, if you happen to be in Edmonton in the first week of August, you really should come to Heritage Festival!
